Heritage Mall white oak

The story: The landmark white oak at Heritage Mall is about 300 years old and appeared in good health in October 2005, following what some said was a severe pruning. They worried about the tree’s future after two large limbs broke off, and a company was called in to remove a number of rotten branches. After the pruning, Buena Vista Arbor Care Co., which took care of the tree for about 13 years, contacted the city’s forester with concerns that the tree was cut back too much. The tree is one of Albany’s designated Heritage Trees.

Whimsical scene now amuses site where tree caused trouble

Jim and Linda Lawrence hated to see the old tree go, but they really didn’t have a choice: the roots had become a danger to the foundation of their home.

What they did with the stump that was left behind when they cut down the 57-year-old sequoia, however, allowed them to feel a little better about losing the tree.

Near the edge of tears, Audrey Bach watched Friday morning as tree fallers brought down the century-old cottonwood in front of her house at 326 S.W. Eighth St. Another huge cottonwood at 226 S.W. Eighth St. had been removed earlier in the week.

Oak lives on for Arbor Week

Peter Kenagy guided a saw blade horizontally through the massive trunk of a 214-year-old Oregon white oak Thursday morning at his farm in North Albany.

The 3-inch thick slabs he cut go to West and South Albany high schools, where shop students will mill the wood further and use it to make furniture, all in celebration of Arbor Week, April 5-9, said Mark Azevedo of the Albany Tree Commission. He arranged this year’s project.

Century-old maple needs to be cut down

The 100-year-old maple tree at the Linn County Courthouse that lost a large branch during Sunday night’s storm will have to be cut down, said Russ Williams, head of the county’s general services department.

“Because of the way the branch ripped away from the main trunk, the area won’t heal, so it becomes receptive to pests, disease and rot,” he said.

Tree class, lottery scheduled Thursday

The Albany Parks and Recreation Department, in conjunction with the Albany Tree Commission, will hold a “Pruning 101″ class and tree lottery at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Albany Senior Center, 489 Water Ave. N.W.

Maple slab kicks off Arbor Week

It took eight people Friday to carry into the Albany library the 19-foot, 500-pound Oregon big leaf maple slab that will be part of an Arbor Week display.

“We’re putting the slab at the library to show the importance and benefits of trees in the community,” said Mark Azevedo, a North Albany resident who helped prepare the piece. The slab will be on display for about a week in the garden room at the library, 2450 14th Ave. S.E.
